Nine times out of ten, they’re thrilled before we ever get to porcelain. I’d rather have that conversation early than let someone spend money they didn’t need to spend.

That said, there are real cases where veneers are the right answer, deep staining that whitening can’t touch, worn or chipped teeth, significant shape concerns, or tetracycline staining that’s embedded from the inside out. We use e.max porcelain for most of our veneer cases. It layers beautifully and mimics the translucency of natural enamel. Bright white is easy. Natural-looking bright white, matched to your skin tone and the shape of your face, takes more thought. My philosophy is simple: I want you to look like a better version of yourself, not a different person. Unnatural bright white is a red flag that something was done. That’s not my style.

A full smile makeover typically involves 8 to 10 veneers, what shows when you naturally smile. Some patients start with 6 and add a couple more later when they’re ready. Upper and lower together usually runs 18 to 20. The results are genuinely breathtaking when it’s done right and done with intention.

We also do smile mock-ups before any prep work. A patient can see the look as many times as needed before committing. We’re both going to live with these results, so I don’t rush it.

Teeth whitening when you need results without the commitment

Not every smile makeover involves veneers. For a lot of patients near Sloan Park and around the Mesa Arts Center area, in-office Zoom whitening is the move, especially when there’s a timeline involved.

Zoom runs $400-$600 and includes a take-home touch-up kit. Results show after about two hours in the chair. It’s the fastest, strongest option we have. Take-home custom trays are $200-$350 and produce equally good results over a few weeks, but they require you to actually do the work at home every day. Most patients don’t want to commit to that routine.

On sensitivity: we use a desensitizing gel before and after every whitening session, and we don’t push patients to go more aggressively than their teeth can handle. I’ve done whitening on myself at the highest concentration, my teeth were brutally sensitive for three days, but the results were worth it. That’s not the experience I want for every patient, which is why we tailor the approach to the individual.

OTC strips are fine for maintenance or very mild discoloration, but they won’t get you to your brightest. If your teeth are already close to where you want them, strips aren’t a waste. If you’re starting with significant staining, you’ll need more than a drugstore strip.
