Medicare and dental coverage trip up a lot of Mesa seniors, so let’s make it clear. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not pay for routine dental care. But Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans usually do, and Glisten Dental Mesa on North Gilbert Road accepts all Medicare Advantage dental plans. We also keep a free in-house Medicare specialist on staff to help you figure out your benefit, and we can do the whole thing in Spanish if that’s easier. Here’s what you need to know.
Does Medicare pay for dental?
The honest answer comes in two parts:
- Original Medicare (Parts A and B): no. No coverage for routine cleanings, fillings, crowns, dentures, or extractions, by federal program design. The only exception is dental work that’s an inseparable part of a covered medical procedure. With only Original Medicare, routine dental is out of pocket.
- Medicare Advantage (Part C): usually yes. These private plans bundle your Medicare and most include a dental benefit, commonly full preventive coverage plus an annual allowance toward fillings, crowns, dentures, and extractions.
When Mesa patients ask if we “take Medicare” for the dentist, they almost always mean their Medicare Advantage plan, and yes, we accept all Medicare Advantage dental plans.
A free Medicare specialist on staff, who speaks your language
Medicare Advantage dental benefits differ wildly between plans, and most people don’t know what theirs actually covers. Dr. Dawood keeps an in-house Medicare specialist whose help is free, patient or not. He reviews your plan’s dental allowance, explains what’s covered, and helps you find a better-fitting plan if you’re shopping, since there are many Medicare dental options patients don’t know about. For our Spanish-speaking patients, Dr. Carlos Rogel and our Spanish-speaking front desk make sure the entire conversation, benefits and treatment, happens in Spanish if you prefer.
What Medicare Advantage dental typically covers
- Preventive (cleanings, exams, X-rays): commonly covered in full.
- Basic and major (fillings, extractions, crowns, dentures): up to your plan’s annual dental allowance, which ranges widely by plan.
- Dentures: covered on many plans, important for many of our older Mesa patients.
Your annual dental allowance is the number that matters. We help you sequence treatment so you get the full value of each year’s allowance before any cost falls to you.
What you’d pay at our Mesa office
Within your allowance, preventive care is usually free and other work is covered at your plan’s rate. Beyond it, our standard fees apply: simple extraction $200-$400, surgical $300-$600, single implant from $2,900, emergency exam $50-$100 (most plans cover this fully or close). We verify your Medicare Advantage dental benefit before scheduling and walk through your out-of-pocket line by line, no surprises.
